1, 2, 3, ... と物の個数(the number of things)を数える(count)
大きさ(a size, a magnitude)に上限(an upper limit, a maximum, the supremum)はないこの数を、自然数(a natural number)という。

この数の書き方(a way of writing, how to write, a form)位取り記数法(positional notation; positional numeration system; positional representation system)という名前がついている(It is named as ...)が、コレより便利な(commodious; convenient; feasible; handy)方法(a method; a way; a plan; a system)が見つかって(to be found; to be discovered)いないので、人類(the human race, humanity, humankind, man; mankind)はどこでも(anywhere)何語(any language)を話す人でもこれを使う(use)ようにしている。コンピューター(a computer)の中の数は、2進法(binary; binary base; binary notation; binary number system; binary system)である。 でも2進法では桁数(number of digits)が多すぎて人間にとって読むのは苦痛(a pain, misery, mental anguish, suffering, agony, bitterness)なので、8進法(octal notation)とか16進法(hexadecimal notation)で表示(show, express, indicate)印刷(print)している。

高校(a senior high school)では自然数が1から始まる(begin; start; open)と教わる(be taught by , learn from, study under, take lessons from)が、
実は0から始まるとしても構わない(regardless, no problem; it doesn't matter, I don't mind that)、始まり(the beginning; the start; the opening)があるということ(existence, being)が本質(real nature,  essence, intrinsic qualities, substance)
(Peano's postulate)

私達は有限(determinate; finite)サイズ(size)の身体(the body)で有限の時間(time)の命(life span)
数学を語る(speak, tell)ときも、有限の私達は有限の長さの言葉(speech; language, a phrase, an expression)で語る。

当然(naturally, justly, of course)、限界(limits)がある。

少々脱線(an excursion, make a digression, wander in my talk, ramble)したので、話を戻す(go back to the subject;return to the story)

自然数の範囲(an extent, a scope, a range, limits)では、加算はいつでもできるが、減算ができない時がある。

自然数、ゼロ(zero; nought; nothing; nil)、負の自然数の三種をまとめて、整数(integer)と名前をつける(to attach a name to, give one's name)

分数は、分母(a denominator)分子(a numerator)で作られる。

小学校(a primary school, an elementary school, a grade school)で出て来る小数(a decimal fraction)は、分母が、10, 100, 1000, ...
だから、小数は分数に含まれる(to be included; to be comprised of)としてよい。

細かさに下限(the lower limit, the minimum)は無いのである。

小数表現(notation)が出てきたお陰で、隠れた(hidden, covert; subjacent; subterranean)厄介事(a trouble; a nuisance; a difficulty)が一つできている。

0.1 と 0.099999999999 (永久に続く(continues indefinitely, lasts for ever)) が等しい(equal to, equivalent to)という厄介事である。

この差(a difference)をとると、小数点以下(after the decimal point)が同じなので消える(disappear; fade out; go out; go off)はずである、つまり差は9。

90x = 9
10x = 1
x = 1/10
x = 0.1

だが、円周率(the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter)pi や、2の平方根(the square root of 2) sqrt{ 2 } など、有理数ではあり得ない数が身近にあることを知っている(続く(to be continued))。
